The next coffee in our Guatemala selection is La Morena from Huehuetenango. Showcasing the work of women farmers exclusively, La Morena is a Volcafe initiative. As in most agricultural sectors worldwide, gender equality remains a challenge in the Guatemalan coffee industry - especially when you consider that between 20% and 30% of coffee farms are female-operated and, depending on the region, up to 70% of labour in coffee production is provided by women. And this program works to provide skill training and sustainable income opportunities to assist the transformation of poverty into security and prosperity. Volcafe started by identifying farmers through regional coffee competitions to know the different qualities available and the women who produced them. In 2015, La Morena began training 22 farmers from Huehuetenango, contributing to one 30-bag lot. This year's crop has been produced by 93 farmers and yielded 2900 bags!
