A warm welcome back to Wote Konga, one of our favourite Ethiopian washing stations. Over the years we have provided this to UK Brewers Cup winners, and the natural process has also been the star in our Sweetshop blends. This year brings us a washed lot with gorgeous floral and spicy notes, a quintessentially Ethiopian espresso! Wote Konga, named after the Konga kebele, or village, is located at 1950 masl in the Gedeo zone of Yirgacheffe. During harvest, with an average of 2 hectares each, up to 800 smallholders deliver fresh cherries to the station daily. The first and last lots of the season are commonly produced as naturals, whereas the mid-season lots are typically washed. Regardless of the process, meticulous quality control of the mill is managed by Mr Hayat, who recently took the helm from the longtime head of Wote Konga mill Mr Mergia. Through careful sorting at delivery and slow drying on raised beds, the coffee is given every opportunity to shine to its fullest potential.
