Clean floral and yellow fruit flavours expand expectations of the natural process in Segude from Ethiopia’s Jimma Province. Like Melka Gumie from earlier this year, this delicate lot is the work of one female producer: Nesru Abanura Ababuligu. Since the 2017 legal reforms, many small-scale farm owners have sought to export their coffee directly to achieve financial independence. Natural process is the most accessible option due to its relative simplicity, a shift from the previously scale-dependent washed coffee practices in Africa. Nesru is the first female member of the Tokuma Group, an informal collective of former Keta Meduga cooperative members in the Agaro region of Jimma. Despite being competitors, these producers support each other with a strong sense of unity. Segude harmonises effervescent, pineapple-like acidity with floral notes like bergamot and oolong tea for a filter you’ll not soon forget!
