50% UNION SAN PEDRO
50% VOLCANES ANTIGUA
Pointing to the future, the next iteration of The Filter Blend brings together industry leaders Los Volcanes Coffee from Guatemala and Union San Pedro from Mexico. Highlighting the importance and impact of agroforestry and regenerative farming and what that means for the environment, community, and cup quality - this iteration and what it stands for might just be our favourite blend ever.
"Our system is designed to bring life back to the farm. It is a regenerative system that focuses on the whole ecosystem but especially the soil and the microorganisms that need to be present in order for the farm to thrive." Los Volcanos Coffee US Director Dan Griffin
For this lot, Los Volcanes Coffee (LVC) purchased cherry from partner farmers in the region surrounding historic Antigua and processed it at their wet mill, Beneficio La Esperanza. While much of the cherry comes from a community of 43 small-scale producers on the Volcán de Agua, the rest represent the big historical estates that Antigua is known for internationally; LVC blended these single-producer lots to fit the traditional Antigua profile: round body with a sticky, caramel-like sweetness.
The Union San Pedro cooperative represents about 200 small-scale coffee producers from seven communities near San Pedro El Alta, and along with being an exceptional example of cooperative organization and leadership, USP is known for its robust edible agroforestry program. The pinnacle to our Mexico showcase this season, you can read more about the work and outlook of Union San Pedro on our blog.
